As a veteran, I’ve always believed in giving back to the community that shaped me. My name is John Reuter – an Air Force veteran, realtor, and host of The Veteran Realtor Podcast – and I am dedicated to making a difference for Wisconsin veterans. Over the years, I’ve worked closely with veterans and their families, listening to their challenges, especially when it comes to housing affordability.
Today, I am proud to take a more active role by introducing two critical proposals to Wisconsin legislators that could significantly improve the lives of veterans across our state.
Current Property Tax Credit: How It Works
The Wisconsin Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit offers financial relief by reimbursing eligible veterans for property taxes they pay on their homes. However, the current structure has its limitations. Veterans must meet a 100% service-connected disability rating to qualify, and the credit is provided as a reimbursement, meaning veterans must first pay taxes upfront and then wait for a refund.
The Proposed Changes I’m Advocating For
Based on my conversations with veterans and a deep understanding of the challenges they face, I am introducing two proposals aimed at addressing these limitations:
1. Lowering the Disability Threshold to 70%
The first proposal seeks to expand eligibility by lowering the required disability rating from 100% to 70%. Veterans with moderate disabilities also deserve access to the support this credit provides. By reducing the threshold, we can extend this benefit to thousands more who have served our country honorably.
2. Transitioning from a Credit to an Exemption
Currently, veterans must pay their property taxes upfront and then apply for a reimbursement. My second proposal aims to eliminate this financial burden by converting the credit into a property tax exemption. This change would mean:
No upfront payments: Veterans wouldn’t need to pay property taxes throughout the year.
Immediate affordability: Freed-up funds could be used for other essential expenses, improving financial stability.
Streamlined process: Veterans wouldn’t have to wait for reimbursements, simplifying their financial planning.
Why These Changes Matter
Housing affordability remains a critical issue for veterans in Wisconsin. These proposals would:
Expand access to financial relief for veterans with partial service-connected disabilities.
Improve cash flow for veterans, making homeownership more manageable.
Reduce administrative burdens for both veterans and the state.
For a veteran paying $12,000 annually in property taxes, transitioning to an exemption could mean immediate relief, putting hundreds of dollars back into their monthly budget.
My Mission as a Veteran Advocate
As someone who has served and continues to serve in my community, I’m taking the lead in bringing these proposals to Wisconsin legislators. I’m working to ensure these reforms are front and center in the upcoming legislative session.
This is not just a policy change; it’s a personal mission. I know firsthand the challenges veterans face, and I’m committed to making housing more affordable and accessible for all who have served.
I’m calling on fellow veterans, community members, and supporters to help amplify this message. Your voice matters – whether it’s sharing your story, engaging with legislators, or spreading the word.
Get Involved
I believe these changes can make a lasting difference, but it requires collective effort. If you’re a veteran, a family member, or someone passionate about supporting our heroes, I’d love to hear from you. Share your thoughts, suggestions, or personal experiences – every voice strengthens this cause.
Let’s work together to ensure these proposals gain the attention they deserve and create a better future for veterans in Wisconsin.

This is just the beginning of the conversation. As I continue to push these proposals forward, I’ll share updates on their progress, insights from discussions with legislators, and ways you can get involved.
