VA Claims Assistance in Dane County: What Veterans Need to Know

Filing for VA benefits can be a daunting process for veterans in Dane County, WI. With hundreds of cases being processed, it’s essential to understand the role of Veteran Service Officers (VSOs), accredited attorneys, and claims agents in ensuring a smooth claims experience.

We recently sat down with Travis West of West & Dunn, a law firm specializing in veteran legal services, to discuss the differences between VSOs and attorneys in the VA claims process.

What’s the Difference Between a VSO and an Attorney for VA Claims?

Many veterans turn to VSOs for help with their initial VA claims, but sometimes, legal assistance is necessary. Travis West explains:

“Veteran Service Officers do a great job and work with hundreds, even thousands, of veterans. But with the volume of claims they handle, it’s tough to go through every single detail of a case.”

While VSOs provide free assistance, there are limits to what they can do. Attorneys, on the other hand, fill in the gap when a case requires legal expertise—especially for appeals.

“Attorneys are not allowed to charge a fee for an initial claim. If a veteran walks into my office and says, ‘Hey Travis, I have a knee problem from service—can you help me file a claim?’ I’d probably say, ‘Sure, here’s the form, let me help you fill it out.’ But generally, attorneys will refer veterans back to a VSO for an initial claim.”

Why Veterans Should Be Cautious of Unaccredited Companies

In recent years, unaccredited companies have entered the space, offering help with VA claims—but they don’t have direct access to VA systems.

“There is a lot of controversy in this area because, in the last 5 to 10 years, many unaccredited companies have been assisting veterans. They can’t access VA systems, so while they might provide advice, they can’t file the claim for you.”

This means that if a veteran uses an unaccredited company, they might be charged an upfront fee and still need to complete the claim process themselves.

As Travis West notes:

“Veterans should know that if they go to unaccredited companies, they will likely pay a fee for the initial filing. Meanwhile, VSOs and accredited attorneys provide many of these services at no cost—except in the case of appeals.”
